Installation Guide

Installation is quick and easy.

A slate vent is installed by removing a single slate and fitting the vent in its place, securing it to the roof batten.

The vent sits flush with the surrounding slates and includes a flange that underlaps the neighbouring slates to prevent water ingress.

How Do Slate Vents Work?

You can see how our Slate Vents work in the image to the left (or above if you're on mobile).

Air flows through the vent via the underbase unit and grille.

Any rain that enters the vent is channeled down through the bottom and onto the roof tiles below (always keeping it above the roof level).

The pipe adaptor makes an easy connection point for your bathroom extractor fan or soil vent pipe.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need slate vents?

You need a slate vent if your loft lacks adequate ventilation, which shows up as condensation, damp patches, or mould on your roof timbers.

Building regulations require sufficient roof ventilation in most properties, and a slate vent is the cleanest way to achieve this on a slate roof without disrupting the roofline.

They are also required when terminating a bathroom extractor fan or soil vent pipe through a slate roof.

How much does it cost to fit a slate vent?

Firstly, the total cost depends on how many vents you need. One vent starts from £34.99.

Then you have labour costs, but it's less affected by vent quantity than you'd think.

Once a roofer is up on the roof, fitting each additional vent takes little extra time, so the labour cost per vent drops significantly if you're having more than one installed.

Most roofers charge a day rate of £150 to £250, and a typical installation will take half to a full day's work.

The bigger factor is access. On a single-storey property, a roofer can usually work from a ladder. On a two-storey property, or anywhere with difficult roof access, scaffolding may be needed, adding £75- £100 per week to the bill. Confirm this upfront when getting your quote.

Lastly, labour rates vary by region, so it's worth getting at least two written quotes before committing.

How many slate vents do I need?

If you work with a professional roofer, they should be able to tell you how many slate vents you need based on the dimensions of your roof.

For roofs with a pitch over 15 degrees, the continuous airflow required is 10 millimetres.
